HISTORY IN MINIATURE: Using Models to Visualize the Past
The museum uses scale models created by master builders and hobbyists as a method to bring the size of massive ships to a more accessible level. Each model is a piece of art and a three-dimensional representation of history.
Model makers spend many hours researching and perfecting techniques of construction and painting to develop this art form.
To examine the use of models as a representation of history in miniature, the Wilmington Plastic Modelers Club will hold a meeting of club members at the Maritime Museum in Southport. Club members will have all types of ships, planes, tanks, and cars on display — some in various states of construction. Browse their creations and ask questions about the modeler’s art, and find out tips for painting and displaying models. If you have a model you would like help with, bring it with you and have the members of the WPMC give you advice!
