Educational Resources

The N.C. Department of Natural and Cultural Resources is sponsoring free access to Streamable Learning for public schools in Tier One counties during the 2020-21 school year. The museum, which is one of the department’s participating locations, also offers the following resources for educators.

Educator Development

This free Educator Development class for formal, informal, and homeschool educators gives attendees a look at what the museum offers and how to incorporate maritime history and culture into lessons. Each unit is Social Studies plus another subject and how NCMMSpt can help teach about it. Each unit has a short video, activity, and reflection question. It is designed to spark creativity within your own planning as well as how to include the museum outside of only history settings! It is completely self-paced, so you can start and stop as many times as you want to fit your schedule. In total, we are offering .5 CEU to match the 10 hour contact hour = 1 CEU requirement. To sign up, please email katy.menne@ncdcr.gov. (Please note a FREE Gmail account is required to participate.)

Educational bundles

The museum is offering educational packets for children ages 4 and up. The lesson plans incorporate worksheets, an activity, and a surprise gift designed for one of four different age groups: 4 to 6; 7 to 12; 13 to 17; and 18 and up. Each bundle, which is sent via mail, is $15 and all proceeds support the museum. Featured topics are Pirates, Hurricanes, Working on the Water, U.S. Coast Guard,Native Americans, the Civil War, Colonial North Carolina, Women’s History and ECO WarriorsFor information or to order, email katy.menne@ncdcr.gov.
