Third Tuesday: Maritime Indians: The Carolina Algonquians of the Outer Banks

There is a tendency to think of Native Americans as exclusively terrestrial people and cultures. Although the Carolina Algonquians did not develop extensive ocean navigation and exploration, evidence strongly suggests that their culture was heavily influenced by the sea and the coast well before the arrival of Europeans. The drawings of John White and Thomas Harriot’s Briefe and True Report of the New Found Land of Virginia provide ample evidence that the Carolina Algonquians exhibited elements of a maritime culture. Join Dr. Christopher Oakley to examine the history, culture, and legacy of the Carolina Algonquians of eastern North Carolina.

All Third Tuesday evening programs are free and open to the public; however, donations are happily accepted. Lectures are held at the Southport Community Building at 223 E.
