Submarine warfare during World War II came quite close to the North Carolina coast. While the southern border of Operation Drumbeat is in the Outer Banks, the Lower Cape Fear saw its share of action. Join Curator of Education Katy Menne for in an in-depth look at SS John D Gill, which a German U-boat torpedoed off Frying Pan Shoals in March 1942.

All Third Tuesday programs are free and open to the public; donations are appreciated. Lectures are held at the Southport Community Building, 223 E. Bay St., at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.
