Join Garrity-Blake in exploring Beaufort and Southport's hubs of menhaden fishmeal and oil industries with a special look at race relations and the African American crews that raised their heavy nets of fish with chanteys.

Dr. Barbara Garrity-Blake has a Ph.D. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of Virginia. She teaches marine fisheries policy at the Duke University Marine Lab in Beaufort. She is author of "The Road at the Water's Edge" University of North Carolina Press, "Fish House Opera" Mystic Seaport Press, and "The Fish Factory" The University of Tennessee Press. She lives in the Down East Carteret County community of Gloucester with her husband, a boat builder and musician.

Lecture runs just under 55 minutes. Captions can be turned on or off in the lower right hand corner
